We had to drive our vehicle through the sub-district to a place called Kacchaptali. The Bangladesh Army controls entry to Kacchaptali, so everyone must register with them and provide proof of identity (national ID card or passport), as well as a guide for groups of up to ten people. Rowangcchari Polices are in charge of the registration. The huts are elevated above the ground to keep the villagers safe from streams and flash floods. As a result, 'Debotakhum' means 'God of Khums.'\nThe khum is said to be up to 60 feet deep. Because people have drowned in the khum before, even though most of us knew how to swim, we were required to wear life jackets. Only our excited shouts and the sound of oars on water could be heard in the silence. The sounds reflected off the rocky hills, creating a magical atmosphere. It was unique, something I had never experienced before, and something that everyone should have opportunity to do at least once in their life. The khum has a mysterious beauty to it.
