Tucked beside the hustle of Darling Harbour, this garden offers a calm retreat with deep cultural roots. It was built in 1988 to celebrate Australia’s bicentenary and mark the growing relationship between Sydney and its sister city Guangzhou in southern China.\n\nThe garden was a direct gift from the people of Guangdong Province and was designed by Chinese landscape architects and artisans. Unlike Western-style gardens that focus on symmetry and control, this follows traditional Taoist philosophy. Taoism emphasises balance and the natural flow of energy, which is what’s known as qi. That’s why the garden incorporates elements like water, stone, plants, and built structures in specific ways. It’s not meant to be walked in a straight line. Instead, you're encouraged to wander, pause, and take in each scene as it unfolds.\n\nYou’ll notice winding paths, layered views, and unexpected turns. These are deliberate. The goal is to mirror nature, not reshape it. The architecture also reflects this idea with curved rooftops, open pavilions, and circular doorways all drawing from centuries of Chinese design tradition.\nFun fact: the garden includes over 1,000 tonnes of rock from a quarry near Taihu Lake in China, which were shipped to Sydney specifically for this project. Those jagged, weathered stones you see by the water? They're a major feature in classical Chinese gardens, valued not for perfection but for their natural, aged beauty.\n\nFew cities outside China have a garden like this, and even fewer have one built and gifted by international craftsmen. It's a space built on respect, culture, and diplomacy — and a rare place to slow down and reflect in the middle of a modern city.\n\n","type":"text"}]},{"address":"Darling Quarter","location":{"longitude":151.2026402,"longitudeDelta":0.09250719598070653,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":-33.87474246066094},"placeId":"ChIJrWQcnzuuEmsRPTRAtkD-Fag","media":[{"content":{"place_id":"ChIJrWQcnzuuEmsRPTRAtkD-Fag"},"type":"place"},{"content":"Now onto Darling Quarter, a modern public space that blends office life, family fun, and urban design. Projected on a curved screen at the entrance to Barangaroo Reserve, this striking piece welcomes visitors onto Gadigal Country with sound, light, and movement.\nThe word \"Wellama\" means \"to come back\" in the Gadigal language. It’s a reminder that this land, long before office towers and restaurants, was home to the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. The artwork acts as a cultural gateway, inviting you to pause and reflect on the continuous connection between First Nations people and this place.\nThe work runs in a short loop, just under two minutes, but it carries weight. It’s been completely reimagined using local sandstone and native vegetation to resemble the original shoreline before colonisation.\nWalking paths lead you past lookout points, quiet spots, and interpretive signs explaining the site's transformation and cultural significance.\nNamed after Barangaroo, a Cammeraygal woman who lived during the early years of British colonisation, this reserve honours her strength and leadership. She was known for speaking out against colonial injustice, resisting the imposition of British customs, and defending her people’s rights and traditions. Unlike many Aboriginal figures from this time, Barangaroo’s name and story have endured, making her one of the few Aboriginal women publicly recognised in the modern city.","type":"text"}]},{"address":"Marrinawi Cove","location":{"latitude":-33.85562951065328,"longitude":151.20200580000002,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"longitudeDelta":0.17456507414299438},"placeId":"ChIJE-7GI1uuEmsRY_zSWXgWqtI","media":[{"content":{"place_id":"ChIJE-7GI1uuEmsRY_zSWXgWqtI"},"type":"place"},{"content":"Welcome to Marrinawi Cove, the next stop on the tour. From here, you’ll have views across the water to Goat Island, the Harbour Bridge, and the edge of Balmain.\nFun fact: the name “Marrinawi” comes from the Sydney language word for “big canoe,” a reference to the traditional vessels used by the Gadigal people.
