Did you know that this site was originally named Bennelong Point after Woollarawarre Bennelong, a senior Eora man at the time of the arrival of British colonizers in Australia in 1788? The Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, whose design won the international design competition held in 1956. It took 14 years and 10,000 construction workers to build this beautiful structure, which was originally estimated to cost $7 million but ended up costing $102 million, largely paid for by a State Lottery. The Sydney Opera House is covered by more than 1 million roof tiles, made in Sweden, and has a surface area of approximately 1.62 hectares. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October, 1973, and has since been added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2007. The Concert Hall inside the Opera House is home to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and did you know that when the orchestra is on stage, the temperature must be precisely 22.5 degrees Celsius to ensure the instruments stay in tune? Temperature and humidity are critical to musical instruments. The Opera House has a fascinating history, with many interesting stories. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger won his final Mr Olympia bodybuilding title in 1980 in the Concert Hall. And did you know that a net was installed above the orchestra pit in the Joan Sutherland Theatre following an incident during the opera Boris Godunov when a live chicken landed on top of a cellist? More than 10.9 million people visit the Opera House every year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Australia. It is cooled using seawater taken directly from the harbour, with the system circulating cold water through 35 kilometres of pipes to power both the heating and air conditioning in the building. Every year, Lunar New Year is celebrated at the Opera House, with sails lit in red, Lunar Lanterns, and Mandarin tours. In 2019, some 25,000 people celebrated with us. So, let's explore this magnificent structure, and enjoy the stories behind its history and design."},{"type":"text","content":"# Design Proposals"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fopera%206.jpeg?alt=media&token=0d305e37-afb5-4625-b62c-d54bc8ef710c"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fopera%207.jpeg?alt=media&token=004cb810-010b-4f7c-be2f-5ec3bc2c5c1e"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fopera%208.jpeg?alt=media&token=ff1d9390-8e0c-46b5-ac50-1b5372f29561"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fopera%209.jpeg?alt=media&token=1e4942fb-8e4c-4400-b818-a9cdc164e991"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fopera%2010.jpeg?alt=media&token=3e8aee32-8e07-423f-b82c-d40da35e15f4"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fopera%2011.jpeg?alt=media&token=204db3ee-f66c-4dcd-be3e-80e94f6bf130"}]},{"address":"Museum of Contemporary Art Australia","placeId":null,"location":{"longitudeDelta":0.14321712068773834,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":-33.85959361065488,"longitude":151.20908884999994},"media":[{"type":"place","content":{"types":["art_gallery","cafe","establishment","food","museum","point_of_interest","store","tourist_attraction"],"formatted_address":"140 George St, The Rocks NSW 2000, Australia","partial_match":true,"geometry":{"viewport":{"east":151.2104378302915,"south":-33.8609425802915,"north":-33.8582446197085,"west":151.2077398697085},"location":{"lng":151.2090295,"lat":-33.8599358},"location_type":"ROOFTOP"},"address_components":[{"types":["street_number"],"short_name":"140","long_name":"140"},{"types":["route"],"short_name":"George St","long_name":"George Street"},{"types":["locality","political"],"short_name":"The Rocks","long_name":"The Rocks"},{"types":["administrative_area_level_2","political"],"short_name":"City of Sydney","long_name":"City of Sydney"},{"types":["administrative_area_level_1","political"],"short_name":"NSW","long_name":"New South Wales"},{"types":["country","political"],"short_name":"AU","long_name":"Australia"},{"types":["postal_code"],"short_name":"2000","long_name":"2000"}],"plus_code":{"compound_code":"46R5+2J The Rocks NSW, Australia","global_code":"4RRH46R5+2J"},"place_id":"ChIJ68aBlEKuEmsRHUA9oME5Zh0"}},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fmca.jpeg?alt=media&token=c724501c-29a0-432d-902b-3dfa29c24826"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fmca%202.jpeg?alt=media&token=90d0f762-49b0-4057-9870-a4e5069be6b7"},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Faeq05RJ5wjZanWOHnzSv%2Fmca%203.jpeg?alt=media&token=f8923e04-d2df-472f-8afb-d2509211c36b"},{"type":"link","title":"Museum of Contemporary Art","content":"mca.com.au"},{"type":"text","content":"Welcome to our next stop - the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). The hotel's architecture is a blend of French elegance and Australian character, designed by famous Australian architectural firm, Joseland Gilling. Its modern landscaping is bathed in natural light from the glass roofs, providing the perfect prelude to the nearby Botanic Gardens.\n\nInside, you can unwind in our luxurious lounge, featuring a rich collection of antique books and a cosy fireplace. The same corridors have been frequented by celebrities, including the Beatles during their 1964 Australian tour. As our final stop for today, let the hotel's elegance and vibrant history permeate your senses.\n\nAs we wrap up today's tour, we cordially invite you to refresh at Soirée Bar at Sofitel. Wine, dine and relax as you enjoy cocktails meticulously curated by our talented team. Whether your preference is for French-inspired Espresso Martinis or something more local, the Soirée Bar menu has something to satisfy all palates. Thanks for joining us today, and we hope to see you again soon.\n\n"}]}]
