It was originally erected in the 1880’s to keep dingos out of the fertile south-eastern part of the continent and to protect the sheep flocks of Southern Queensland. It stretches 5,614km, although at one stage it did stretch for over 8,000km.\n\nPrior to the completion of the Dingo Fence, one station alone in South Australia reported losing 11,000 sheep in a single year due to dingo attacks and in 1999 it was estimated that over 5.9 million stock were being protected by the barrier.\n\nThe fence was generally maintained but in the early 70's regular instances occurred where landholders failed to maintain the fence. In 1975 the estimated cost of repairs was $915,000 and in 1978 the Stock Routes and Rural Lands Protection Board was formed.\n\nThe fence passes through Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Here in the Western Downs, you can find the start of the northern end of the Dingo Fence, located between Jandowae and Jimbour. The fence is nearly 2 metres (6ft) high and extends approximately 30cm underground to prevent dingos and wild dogs digging under it. The fence is maintained by eight teams of men who patrol their section of fence each week and is funded by Local and State Governments.\n\n","type":"text"},{"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2Fz9lHiU0Tciey8ubSBbxl%2FJandowae%20-%20Alex%20Coppo-7766.jpg?alt=media&token=0d5798d4-672f-4d55-9bc3-d7fc98fea297","type":"img"},{"content":"_To visit the fence drive south for 16 km from Jandowae and turn left into Lyndley connection road then 2.2km turn left into Lyndley Lane then drive 1.4 km and turn right into Fletchers Road.
