Did you know that since 1969 this kinetic sculpture has mesmerized both locals and visitors with its delightful unpredictability?\n\nOur \"Highlights of Wellington\" tour indeed has brought us to this charismatic point nestled in our quirky and lively neighborhood, Cuba Street. As we stand here, you may be wondering why it's called a \"Bucket Fountain\". Just take a look, my friends, what you see is an iconic alternative piece of modern art, a fountain yes, but not the kind you typically expect!\n\nThe Bucket Fountain is a wonderful testament to Wellington's creative spirit. You may ask why? Well, during its construction, the architects had a rather ingenious idea. They designed the buckets to unexpectedly tip and splash the water around, adding an element of surprise! Picture this - you're walking by, minding your own business when an unpredictable splash catches you off guard. It's these moments of unpredictable delight that capture the spirit of Wellington.\n\nAs we marvel at the shifting colors of the buckets, why not take part in a light challenge? Count the number of times you see a bucket tip over in the next minute. Can you predict which bucket will tip next? It's trickier than you might think and demonstrates the whimsical charm of Wellington.\n\nThis fountain, my friends, is more than just a visual delight. It represents us, Wellingtonians in a way - unpredictable, colorful and a joy to behold. And some might say, look around us, isn't that just like our city as well? A mix of vibrant cultures, rich history, flair for the new along with respect for the old.\n\nSpeaking of which, after you've soaked in the kinetic charm of the Bucket Fountain, shall we move towards an old charmer waiting for us? Just a few steps away, we're headed to one of the stalwarts of our Wellington community, the Bonnie Prince Charlie's Italian Restaurant, serving mouthwatering risottos since 1982.\n\nRemember to take a snapshot of the Bucket Fountain before we leave. It does have a way of making people smile every time they look at it. And isn't that the aim of good art and good vacations? To leave us with seasoned memories to look back on and smile. So, signal when you're ready, and we'll continue unraveling the narrative of Wellington's enchantments."}]},{"address":"Wellington Cable Car","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.1773310700361052,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":-41.28424601394348,"longitude":174.7752692},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"Welcome, everyone, to the next thrilling chapter of our journey through Wellington. Do you fancy a jaunt up the hillside in style? Well, brace yourselves for a remarkable journey as we behold the majestic Wellington Cable Car.\n\nOur \"Highlights of Wellington\" walking tour has led us to this iconic fixture in Wellington's cityscape. Since opening in 1902, this unique mode of transportation has been an integral part of city life, charming locals and visitors alike. Can you feel the rich tapestry of history enveloping us here?\n\nImagine, if you will, this cable car steeped in history rumbling quaintly through the bustling cityscape. It not only serves as a means of transportation but as a window into Wellington's past. Over a century ago, our predecessors embarked upon the very same journey we're taking today, albeit in a slightly different carriage!\n\nAs we stand here, let your eyes wander down its steep track, extending from Lambton Quay in the heart of the city to the heights of Kelburn. Have you noticed the two counterbalancing cars on the tracks? One goes up as the other comes down—a clever system that truly demonstrates Kiwi ingenuity!\n\nReady for a bit of a challenge? Each carriage sports a unique color scheme; why don't you try to spot them all during your ride? You might even win an extra brownie at our next pit stop if you beat everyone else! \n\nNow, here's a lesser-known tidbit about the Wellington Cable Car—it was the inspiration behind famous children's author Richard Scarry's story about a boat tram that saved the day by acting as a lifeboat. So, you are not just stepping into a cable car, but into an enchanting narrative that has sparked the imagination of children worldwide!\n\nLastly, don’t miss the Cable Car Museum at the top. Not only does it tell the captivating tale of the cable car’s history, but it also shelters the Cable Cars of yesteryears, still in impeccable condition. \n\nOnce you've taken it all in, signal when you're ready to continue our journey. But take your time—remember, we're not just traveling, we're making memories here. The next stop on our tour is waiting, but the rhythm of Wellington is unhurried, and so are we. Here's to the next leg of our adventure!"}]},{"address":"Wellington Botanic Garden","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.1773310700361052,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":-41.28282269491841,"longitude":174.76574355},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"Ladies and Gentlemen, I invite you now to inhale deeply. Do you perceive that intoxicating blend of floral scents swirling around us? As we move forward now from the architectural splendour of the Beehive, we've reached our next stop on our 'Highlights of Wellington' tour, the enchanting Wellington Botanic Garden.\n\nDid you know the Wellington Botanic Garden houses more than 25 hectares of distinct areas, showcasing exotic trees, colourful floral displays, and native bush? Just imagine, a single place where the whole world's beauty converges.\n\nAs a frequent visitor to this garden, one thing that's always mesmerized me is its rich history. This lavish landscape first opened its doors in 1868, when the practice of public botanic gardens was just beginning to bloom. The fascinating thing is, the very first sapling planted was a Wellingtonbotanian Tree, a vibrant, pink-blossomed tree indigenous to New Zealand.\n\nNow, if you look closely around you, you'll notice several monumental trees. In particular, pay attention to those with plaques present at their base. These are the garden's heritage trees, including the grand English Oak planted by Queen Elizabeth herself in 1954. Isn't it incredible to feel connected to such a historical event just by standing close to these ancient guardians of the garden?\n\nWhat's truly charming about this area is the unexpected bursts of vibrant colour. Simple, everyday flowers become a riot of hues against the lush, green backdrop of the garden. Look out for the Japanese-inspired cherry blossom trees that bloom each spring, bathing the garden in a shower of soft pink.\n\nNow, before we leave this tranquil oasis behind, there's a small challenge I'd like to present to you all. I challenge you to locate a particular Pin Oak Tree, planted back in 1868 - the first tree to ever grace these gardens. A clue for you - it's within sight of the begonia glasshouse. Several guests have told me how rewarding it was to be able to place their hand on such a living testament to botanic history.\n\nOnce you've taken a few moments to truly immerse in this emerald escape from city life, and perhaps found the historic Pin Oak, wave my way. I'll then guide you to our next stop, where more wonder awaits. Until then, I encourage you to savour the sights, sounds and, of course, the smells within this beautiful, bay-side garden.\n\n"}]},{"address":"Bolton Hotel","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.1773310700361052,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":-41.27925321394102,"longitude":174.77463854999996},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the next destination in our journey - the distinguished Bolton Hotel, the epitome of comfort and luxury in the heart of Wellington. Did you know this modern haven is named after the first British settler ship that arrived in Wellington? Indeed, history is never far from reach in this extraordinary city!\n\nHere we are, standing right in front of an architectural gem. The Bolton Hotel serves as a graceful testament to Wellington's spirit. As we gaze at its facades, take a moment to appreciate the modern aesthetic that seamlessly intertwines with local charm, an embodiment of how the city itself has evolved.\n\nRemember how we talked about the Beehive's unique design earlier? Here’s a tidbit you might enjoy. The visionary behind the Bolton Hotel, architect Tony Staples, was inspired by the Beehive's remarkable construction, aiming to create a complementary structure that carries with it a distinct identity. Can you see how the hotel’s design echoes the shapes and forms of our beloved Beehive?\n\nAs your guide and someone who has spent years around Bolton Hotel, I can assure you the allure of this establishment is much more than it being a comfortable place to settle down. It’s a treasured part of Wellington's urban fabric, seen in the ways its patrons and staff interact, weaving a tapestry of camaraderie, warmth, and belonging. Do you notice the diverse mix of visitors around us? That's the Bolton Hotel for you, a microcosm of Wellington's multifaceted society!\n\nJust around that corner, you will find an art piece you won't find on Google. A restored painting of the old Bolton Street, after which the hotel was named, graces the lobby. This artwork perfectly captures the Bolton Street scene from decades ago, transporting all who view it back in time. Do take a moment to absorb its intricate detail and the untold stories it holds.\n\nAs we stand here, looking out at the bustling city, take a moment to picture the great times you could have, and the memories you'll take home from this beautiful urban sanctuary. Once you've taken it all in, let me know, and we'll move on to uncover more surprises that this vibrant city holds for us. \n\nAnytime you need a break from our explorations, remember that the sophisticated and friendly Bolton Hotel lobby is just a few steps away, ready to welcome us with its relaxing ambiance. Do let me bring you the highlights of Wellington and show you how wonderfully welcoming our city is. Are you ready to continue our journey? Let's press on!"}]}]
