Maxwell Chemicals was a four hectare solvent, oil recycler and distillery reclaiming works, and the chemicals assisted the fire to rapidly gain in magnitude. At the fire’s height the whole complex was involved, and containers of chemicals began exploding. One of these explosions rocked the complex and the concussion hurled several firefighters backwards. Station Officer Brian Duncan who was working in the area was injured and taken to hospital, with his helmet receiving significant damage in the blast. Eventually the intensity of the fire decreased, and crews were able to move in and control the situation. While Station Officer Duncan was bruised from the explosion, he made a full recovery and continued to serve as part of the NSW Fire Brigades for another 10 years, when he retired."},{"type":"text","content":"1891 Shand Mason Steamer\n\nNicknamed “Big Ben” the 1891 Shand Mason Steamer is a fine example of 19th century, horse-drawn, steam-powered technology, innovation and workmanship. Although it has much in common with other steamers, and is representative of its type, it stands alone with regards to its power and capacity. Big Ben is held in high esteem by Fire Engine enthusiasts and this is evidenced by the care and maintenance carried out by volunteers at the Museum of Fire. The steamer has a continuity of association with an important event of national significance – Federation. It has participated in both the Federation Parade of 1901, as well as the Centenary of Federation Parade in 2001. From the date of its purchase and importation from London, the Shand Mason Steamer has been the property of Fire and Rescue NSW."},{"metadata":{"width":564,"height":820},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FpHEpjW1SoIUk3ffcdSe6%2FMuseum%20of%20Fire.png?alt=media&token=d45ccded-02c0-413f-bc2a-e41e6b5d33d2"},{"type":"link","content":"https://www.museumoffire.net/collection-highlights"}]},{"address":"Museum of Fire, Museum Drive, Penrith NSW, Australia","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.0421,"latitudeDelta":0.0922,"latitude":-33.7475868,"longitude":150.6932928},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"Digital Exhibit\n\nWe know your have been enjoying our digital content so we have a special treat! \n\nYou can follow us on Instagram at @mof_sydney\n\nIf you don't have Instagram don't worry as the featured images will make their way on the website. \n"},{"type":"link","content":"https://www.museumoffire.net/projects-8"},{"metadata":{"width":1000,"height":957},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FpHEpjW1SoIUk3ffcdSe6%2FScreen%20Shot%202022-03-07%20at%203.28.43%20pm.png?alt=media&token=a6f55515-eaeb-4a08-af3d-dc9c430971be"},{"metadata":{"width":1000,"height":991},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FpHEpjW1SoIUk3ffcdSe6%2FScreen%20Shot%202022-03-07%20at%203.28.57%20pm.png?alt=media&token=974516c3-bdd5-4d0c-879b-e862f6a44682"},{"metadata":{"width":1000,"height":976},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FpHEpjW1SoIUk3ffcdSe6%2FScreen%20Shot%202022-03-07%20at%203.29.07%20pm.png?alt=media&token=a1da24b2-3081-4d50-a1f5-d4d92bdd9579"}]},{"address":"Museum of Fire, Museum Drive, Penrith NSW, Australia","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.0421,"latitudeDelta":0.0922,"latitude":-33.7475868,"longitude":150.6932928},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"Junior Firefighters Zone\n\nMost children dream of growing up to be a firefighter, so why not grant their wish?\n\n \n\nEveryday at the Museum of Fire aspiring Junior Firefighters are invited to take part in a day of adventure and exploration with fire safety activities, computer games, puzzles and dress ups.\n\n \n\nLocated at the Museum of Fire inside the Junior Firefighter Zone families will be challenged to take command of a fire engine in our simulator, to help find some items that have been hidden around the Museum and to design their own home escape plan.\n\n \n\nThe perfect day out for your little firefighter!"},{"type":"link","content":"https://www.museumoffire.net/fire-engine-rides"},{"metadata":{"width":564,"height":820},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FpHEpjW1SoIUk3ffcdSe6%2FMuseum%20of%20Fire%20(1).png?alt=media&token=c757aa98-f140-400a-b879-909634c4218d"}]},{"address":"Museum of Fire, Museum Drive, Penrith NSW, Australia","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.0421,"latitudeDelta":0.0922,"latitude":-33.7475868,"longitude":150.6932928},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"About the Museum of Fire\n\nThe Museum facilitates a fun and interactive environment where children and adults of all ages can participate in firefighting adventures and education, gain life-long skills, and engage in an immersive experience of what it is like to ‘don the uniform in the name of saving others’.\n\nThe Museum’s collection is of national significance, and celebrates the important and heroic history of firefighters and fire services across Australia.
