The gallery is located on magnificent Sydney Harbour, on Gadigal land. In 2021, the gallery celebrated its 150th anniversary and in 2022, they completed a significant expansion through the Sydney Modern Project. The Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA have designed a new, open and accessible home for art, sensitive to our beautiful parkland setting overlooking Sydney Harbour, on Gadigal country.\n\nThe $344 million Sydney Modern Project is the most significant cultural development in the city since the opening of the Sydney Opera House nearly half a century ago. Together with the NSW Government's $244 million in funding, the Art Gallery has raised more than $100 million from private donors to support this significant investment in art and culture for future generations.\n\nThe expanded Art Gallery is one of the finest tourism destinations in Australia and an absolute must-see for an art and cultural experience in Sydney. Just a 15-minute walk from the city centre, admission to the Art Gallery is free. Dine at Crafted by Matt Moran or MOD. Dining by Clayton Wells. Welcome to Mrs Macquarie's Chair, one of the most iconic and picturesque spots in Sydney. This sandstone rock cut into the shape of a bench was hand-carved for Governor Macquarie's wife, Elizabeth, in 1810. The bench offers a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge in sight.\n\nElizabeth Macquarie was a dedicated philanthropist and spent a lot of time supporting various charitable causes. She is best known for her role in the establishment of the Female Orphan School, which provided a home and education for orphaned and abandoned girls.\n\nMrs Macquarie's Chair is located in the Royal Botanic Garden, which covers 30 hectares and is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. The garden was established in 1816, and over the years has been transformed from a sandy and barren land into a flourishing garden. It now houses a vast collection of plant species, including a significant collection of native Australian flora.\n\nThe gardens also offer a glimpse into the history of the area. Prior to European settlement, this land was inhabited by the Cadigal people, who are the traditional owners of this land. The gardens have a dedicated section called the Cadi Jam Ora - First Encounters Garden that showcases the plants the Cadigal people used for food, medicine and tools.\n\nToday, Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the Royal Botanic Garden attract millions of visitors every year, both locals and tourists. The chair offers a unique vantage point to view Sydney's stunning skyline, and the garden is a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.\n\nI hope you enjoyed this brief history lesson. Did you know that this site was originally named Bennelong Point after Woollarawarre Bennelong, a senior Eora man at the time of the arrival of British colonizers in Australia in 1788?\n\nThe Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, whose design won the international design competition held in 1956. It took 14 years and 10,000 construction workers to build this beautiful structure, which was originally estimated to cost $7 million but ended up costing $102 million, largely paid for by a State Lottery.\n\nThe Sydney Opera House is covered by more than 1 million roof tiles, made in Sweden, and has a surface area of approximately 1.62 hectares. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October, 1973, and has since been added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2007.\n\nThe Concert Hall inside the Opera House is home to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and did you know that when the orchestra is on stage, the temperature must be precisely 22.5 degrees Celsius to ensure the instruments stay in tune? Temperature and humidity are critical to musical instruments.\n\nThe Opera House has a fascinating history, with many interesting stories. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger won his final Mr Olympia bodybuilding title in 1980 in the Concert Hall. And did you know that a net was installed above the orchestra pit in the Joan Sutherland Theatre following an incident during the opera Boris Godunov when a live chicken landed on top of a cellist?\n\nMore than 10.9 million people visit the Opera House every year, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Australia. It is cooled using seawater taken directly from the harbour, with the system circulating cold water through 35 kilometres of pipes to power both the heating and air conditioning in the building.\n\nEvery year, Lunar New Year is celebrated at the Opera House, with sails lit in red, Lunar Lanterns, and Mandarin tours. In 2019, some 25,000 people celebrated with us. So, let's explore this magnificent structure, and enjoy the stories behind its history and design.\n\n"}]},{"address":"Crowne Plaza Sydney Coogee Beach, an IHG Hotel","ttsFile":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2F7kCJEybqRZhbSKzj9dmq%2Ftts_9.mp3?alt=media&token=96e2e2d8-63b6-4757-9e72-313696c983b3","placeId":"ChIJqaQc7z-yEmsRyiVMOspG64Q","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.1773310700361052,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":-33.92263096068021,"longitude":151.2558686},"media":[{"type":"link","title":"Directions To The Hotel","content":"https://maps.app.goo.gl/dNxVVnifnnfPAroFA"},{"type":"place","content":{"place_id":"ChIJqaQc7z-yEmsRyiVMOspG64Q"}},{"type":"img","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2F7kCJEybqRZhbSKzj9dmq%2Fshutters.webp?alt=media&token=484201e6-abc1-4c02-b722-890594c9b13b"},{"type":"text","content":"Welcome back to The Crowne Plaza Sydney Coogee Beach.
