May were invited to dress up and called it Mardi Gras. 350 people started at Taylors Square and they called out to people drinking in the bars in Oxford street to join them. Soon the numbers swelled to around 10000. When they arrived at Hyde Park the Police told them to move along, even though the marchers had a permit to assemble. The police ignored this and started punching and hitting the marchers. Some parade goers ran up William Street to the safety in Kings Cross as this place was generally seen as more accepting.
