John Dunmore Lang, the founding pastor, was often at the center of attention, as he did not stick to the status quo. Lang was the first pastor to not be on the government’s payroll, and was seen as being overly friendly with Aboriginals and immigrants, something that was considered a big taboo at the time. \n\nLang also actively fought against corruption and injustices in the world. He joined the Parliament and was a pivotal part in pushing for the founding of schools, including the first university in Sydney. It used to be an open square surrounded by military barracks, hence its originally being known as Barracks Square or the Parade Ground. After this area was renamed the Victoria Barracks in 1848 – following the arrest of Governor Bligh in 1808 – the square was split. The square was soon renamed Wynyard Square after General Edward Buckley Wynyard. He was the commander of the British troops in Australia from 1848 to 1853. \n\nIn 1875, the square was converted into a park. Copying the British style, the park was gated off and only certain residents in the area were allowed to enter, granted they had a key. However, in 1907, the more Americanized idea of parks being open to the public had popularized. In turn, the park’s gates were torn down and the area is now enjoyed by the public. \n\nIn the park, there is a statue dedicated to John Dunmore Lang in honor of his services both for Scots Church and for the country as a whole. The first one unfortunately burned down in 1865. The building was inspired by the English- style Gothic revival movement with hints of Australian culture mixed in. The architect, William Wardell, worked to incorporate the native plants into his design. While construction began in 1866, it was not fully completed until the year 2000, as only modern tools, such as helicopters, were required to complete Wardell’s vision. While this is not the biggest nor tallest church in Australia, it does have the greatest length. The goal of this expedition was to find a male and female dryococelus australis, also known as Lord Howe Island stick insects or tree lobsters, in order to prevent them from going extinct, as there are only just over 20 remaining in the world. \n\nGeneral admission for the museum is free. The statue, titled Sacrifice, is inspired by the Spartan saying, “come back with your shield – or on it.” The dead warrior is being carried on his shield by his mother, wife nursing infant, and sister.
