This was our first night in Florence, and I couldn’t have asked for a better meal to start our trip. \n\nMy boyfriend had tortello mugellano di patate with a beef ragú (now if you want a good ragú Florence is the best place for it due to it being surrounded by the countryside),not too saucy so it focused a lot on the quality of the meat, which was seasoned perfectly. Tortello mugellano is a potato filled tortellini/ravioli, not to be confused with gnocchi which is pasta made out of potato, which is VERY common around Tuscany. I was skeptical at first but it works amazingly. \n\nMy dish was incredibly flavourful. The pasta was a burrata ravioli, burrata is found all over Florence in tons of dishes, However was stood out was the sauce, which was a pesto red onion cream sauce, which you won’t get elsewhere in Florence as far as I know. \n\nPasta prices are around €13-15, which is more than I’d usually pay but was completely worth it. There are quite a few around the city but that doesn’t take away it’s authenticity. We went to the San Lorenzo one and the atmosphere was lovely with the arched brick ceiling and glass cabinets showing off the different cuts of meat.\n\nIt’s primarily a steak place, obviously we were searching for the best place to have a Fiorentina steak which originated in Florence and you can find everywhere, so we researched A LOT. The over a thousand 5 star reviews on Google don’t lie, this place is amazing. I know it seems expensive but it’s so worth it. This is because it came with 2 portions of rosemary and salt roast potatoes which were fluffy, crispy and very well seasoned. And before the steak you get a huge fresh salami and cheese board with crostini which are breads with toppings such as chopped tomatoes and liver pâté, oh and free bread comes with every meal (in almost every restaurant in Florence). \n\nThe steak arrives on a hot stone pre-sliced around the bone. A bistecca alla fiorentina is always served medium rare, here they will ask how you want it cooked but honestly, it will still come medium rare because it is pretty much a crime to have it cooked any other way. HOWEVER because it arrives on this hot stone all you need to do is just leave the steak on the stone for a bit which will continue cooking it so there’s no embarrassing “I’m sorry could you cook this a bit more” which I loved. I was determined not to go to a place more than once but it was so amazing we went back on our last night as well it was so good, and the waitress remembered us which was so sweet. Speaking of sweet the tiramisu was to die for. It was a huge portion but not filling at all like you’d get in England for example, as the cream is so light and airy that it barely feels like a dessert for only €4 also. \n\nAdditionally they have an extensive wine list, of course to pair with the different steaks, but also on our last night we tried one of their Pici pasta dishes. Now if you don’t know what Pici is it’s a pasta that’s like a thick spaghetti but it’s made with olive oil, and it is divine. Ours was in a white ragú sauce. All in all if you go anywhere in Florence whether you’re there for a day or a week you have to eat here. \n\nI recommend booking in advance but we didn’t so you might get lucky. My boyfriend had a simple margarita and said that the sauce was rich and flavourful (all homemade of course). My pizza however was definitely not simple. It was called the “speck e patate” which is speck (a cured ham similar to prosciutto but with an more distinct taste) with olive oil roast potato on top of a cheese based pizza, cheeses were fior di latte and Gorgonzola. I am all for weird toppings on pizza so potato on pizza really stood out and was honestly a very nice combination of textures, the potato could’ve been seasoned better but the salt from the speck definitely helped.
